What is the best surround sound dvd home theater?
I am looking for a good quality home theater system as a present for my son. Every time I find something I think might be good, I find there are some horribly bad ratings by consumers. Has anyone bought one up to the 500-dollar range that they like, can play games, listen to music, TV, easy to install, and all around nice sound that won’t break down in a month or two?
Thanks!
You get more options and room for expansion if you buy a separate receiver, DVD player and speakers. If you want the ease of one-stop shopping, the Onkyo HT-S5200 is a decent entry-level home theater in a box (HTIB). It’s a good compromise between the limits placed on you by all of the DVD-based HTIBs out there and the expanding your son may want to do down the road. Amazon has it for $494. Onkyo has a good reputation among a/v geeks (like me) because of their quality products.

You would still have to buy a DVD player, but you can get a good upscaling DVD player for $50 now.

My choice would be the Onkyo system 5200, it’s a receiver 7.1 with a 7.1 speaker set up all for $499 at Fry’s Electronics. Just add a dvd or Blue Ray disc player and a tv and you are set up. It’s better than the ones like HTB from Sumsang, Panasonic and Sony.
