ok it sounds to me like your looking for a fiew things. what I reccomend is a reciever with 2 zone audio. You can get yamaha, denon, or marantz for a good price and they all are good, user friendly, and pretty easy to set up. Now for controll over the whole house you can use a rf remote from universal remotes like the mx 900 with a ir repeater like the mrf350. if you have multiple rooms then you will want to look into a speaker selecter with volume contolls. Nile makes a good one.
References :
Many years as a av tech and audio engineer

Hmmm, it sounds like you might need a receiver that comes with a UHF remote. This type of remote works around wall and doors. I'm sure main spot for watching your TV will not be in the kitchen. You'll wanna use your remote to control your receiver and you probably won't be in the line of your receiver. There are a lot of good brands out there. Sony, Onkyo, and Yamaha are some decent ones. The latest Sony models are getting good reviews. Here's a link for a pretty good buying guide where you can do some comparison shopping for the features your are looking for. htp://reviews.cnet.com/4566-6466_7-0.html?tag=next
References :
I prefer the yamaha line of receivers. Well built, not overpriced. I'm the proud owner of an rv 1105 and would buy again.
